ISEA Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Q. WHAT IS ISEA?

A. The Indiana State Employees Association is a professional, independent, locally controlled, non-profit association of Indiana's state employees and retired public employees.

Q. WHO CAN BE A MEMBER?

A. ANY state employee or retired public employee.

Q. WHAT ARE ISEA'S GOALS?

A. ISEA is the voice of Indiana's state employees and retired public employees. We voice your point of view to the general public as well as the legislature and state administration. ISEA actively seeks to improve the profession and benefits of state employment and the quality of the services this profession provides to the citizens of this state.

Q. HOW IS ISEA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PROFESSIONAL

ORGANIZATIONS THAT EXIST FOR STATE EMPLOYEES?

A. Most professional associations are involved in one particular aspect of state services and advocate very effectively in their one specific area. In some organizations, the employee's concerns have tended to take the back seat to client concerns. Because of the broader spectrum of services which are covered by ISEA, its members share common interest more often in the area of state employment. This is why employee issues take the front seat in ISEA. ISEA advocates employee concerns.

Q. WHAT ARE ISEA'S IMMEDIATE GOALS?

A. To expand (grow) and increase our influence on your behalf with the state legislature and gain recognition throughout Indiana in both the public and private sectors. We seek to improve the public's image of the state employee and express effectively our concerns regarding the widespread cutbacks in the necessary services we perform. We seek these changes in a positive, professional manner.

Q. IS ISEA POLITICAL?

A. We are strictly non-partisan. We do from time to time bring issues to our members' attention; but, unlike some unions, we do not try and channel our members into partisan political camps. State employees exist in a unique and highly political environment. We remain by necessity basically politically neutral, except where we have a direct interest in the outcome of an issue.

Q. WHAT CAN I DO FOR ISEA?

A. Take an active interest in state employees and the services they perform by joining ISEA and contributing to the ISEA team effort. State employees' main function is to provide services to citizens. Your tax dollars fund these services, It is in everyone's best interest to improve the state system.
